OKRs as Native Jira Issues

OKRs as Native Jira Issues

With OKR Tracker, an Objective and a Key Result are not rows in a separate planning database that links back to your work. They are Jira issues — created through Jira's own create dialog as the custom issue types Objective and Key Result, sitting in your projects alongside stories, bugs, and epics.

Most OKR tools treat the OKR as its own object living in a second system, then sync it to Jira. That sync is where the truth drifts: the OKR tool says one thing, the board says another, and someone updates a spreadsheet to reconcile them. Here there is nothing to reconcile. The Objective is the issue. When the work moves, the OKR already knows.

An Objective shown as a native Jira issue with the OKR panel Objective issue with the OKR Details panel ## What this means for you
  • Search and JQL for free — Find every At Risk objective for next quarter with a JQL query like issuetype = Objective AND "OKR Status" = "At Risk". No separate query language, no export.
  • Jira permissions apply as-is — Who can see, edit, or transition an Objective is governed by the same project permission scheme you already trust. No second permission model to maintain.
  • Boards, filters, and dashboards include OKRs — Drop Objectives and Key Results onto boards, build filter-backed dashboard gadgets, and report on them with the tools your teams already use.
  • Notifications and watchers work — Assignees and watchers get the same Jira notifications on an Objective they get on any issue. Owning an OKR feels like owning work, because it is.
  • No second tool, no second login, no double entry — Progress lives where the work lives. Update the work; the Grow MRR from $410K to $512K objective reflects it.

How the pieces connect

A Key Result links to its parent Objective through a custom realizes issue link — so the relationship rides Jira's native link graph and works across projects. See Linking Key Results to Objectives.

Progress and status on the Objective are not typed in by hand. They are computed from the Key Results beneath it and recalculated automatically whenever a Key Result changes. See Automatic Rollup & Confidence.
